Fredrick Douglass’s world is different
in some ways than the other slaves who live on his planation; his master’s wife
was teaching him to read, something none of the other slaves were given. The
master that Douglass is owned by is a very ruthless man, he lashes his slaves
with reckless abandon and he forces his wife to not teach Fredrick anymore. The
master would whip women and men, and it was said in the book that where the
blood ran the fastest he would whip there the longest. Fredrick’s world was
dark and horrible. He had no freedoms in a land that has always been called ‘the
land of the free.’.
